2018 SLICED BREAD JAM
& BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL Saturday evening will begin with the Clint Campbell Family performance. This young family made their first festival appearance at the Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival two years ago. Since then, the family has performed for several bluegrass festivals in Missouri. "We are excited to bring the kids back home to perform for family and friends," VanDeventer said. "Their love for music and sharing their gifts and talents definitely come across in their performance. We know everyone will enjoy their music." The Petersen Family Bluegrass Band will be the headline band for the evening. This family band has their own show in Branson, Mo. The Petersens are in their eighth season of shows at the Little Opry Theater in the Branson IMAX Entertainment Complex. The family has toured throughout the United States and recently completed their second international tour to Ireland in July of 2017. Audiences will be entertained as the band performs bluegrass standards, gospel favorites and are sure to laugh at the sibling humor on stage. Sunday afternoon's show will be presented by Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. Vincent is an in-demand guest vocalist for other bluegrass and country music performers, appearing on recordings by Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Gene Watson and other notables. Rhonda and the Rage performed for the Chillicothe Area Arts Council several years ago.

Draws Crowd of Around 400 on Saturday
The Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival held Saturday at the Litton Agri-Center experienced perfect weather and the company of six bands and about 400 persons, according to Julie Ashbrook, administrator of the Chillicothe Area Arts Council, the organization presenting the event. "We wanted to create an event that provided great music in a traditional bluegrass festival setting, where those attending could rest and relax and enjoy playing and listening to one another and to the performances of some extraordinary bands," Ashbrook said. "I cannot get over the amazing musicianship of the players I heard - the music was such fun and so good! Incredible, really."
Mark Shockey, a committee volunteer who served as the campground host, reported that those camping seemed to love the event and the facility. "I toured the campgrounds and talked to those camping and asked for feedback and constructive criticism, and they were all very complimentary and said the event was so well organized and they loved the Litton Center. They thought we'd done a great job," Shockey said. Event chair, Mary Lou VanDeventer, was also pleased with the outcome. "Our committee and volunteers did a great job, and I thought the festival was wonderful. I'm telling you what, the bands were so thrilled with the response of the crowd and the environment," VanDeventer said." "I'm not sure where everyone came from, but I talked with people visiting from Branson and central Kansas, and the Kansas City area, and Iowa. They were just from everywhere. It was a great day," Ashbrook concluded. Sliced Bread Jam Set for June 14
The 2nd annual "Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival" featuring six great bluegrass bands including "The Boxcars", will be held Saturday, June 14 at the Litton Agri Campus, east of Chillicothe. The event is being presented by the Chillicothe Area Arts Council in honor of Chillicothe, the "Home of Sliced Bread". The main event kicks off June 14 with the Sliced Bread Open Jam from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for pickers and listeners, followed by the main show bluegrass bands from 1 until 10 p.m. In addition to "The Boxcars", featured bluegrass bands include "Lowell Appling & Rural Roots"; "Hootin' Annies"; "Lonesome Road Bluegrass Band"; "Possum Trot Band" and "The Treblemakers". For all the events, chairs will be set up, but those attending may bring their own lawn chair, if they wish. Lawn chairs may not be over 36 inches high. Camping will be available for a small charge on a first come, first served basis with some electric camp sites available. Both dry camping and tent camping will also be available. The gates will open at noon Friday, June 13, for campers and for anyone who wants to jam or just listen to those jamming. Although there will be a camping charge on Friday, there will be no charge to the public on Friday to listen or to sit in and jam. On Saturday, the admittance is $15 for adults, $5 for students K-12 and children 5 and under will be admitted for free. This fee will provide a pass to come and go at the gate all day long. The ticket cost will not be included on the arts council's regular season ticket. This is a rain or shine event. |

Winners 2013 Announced
CAPTION: Sliced Bread Jam attendees had a chance to sample the bread from the Home of Sliced Bread bread baking contest Saturday afternoon. This was the first time in the contest's history that samples were made available to the public. The "Home of Sliced Bread" bread baking contest, a tradition of Chautauqua for the past half-decade, found a new home this past Saturday as part of the Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival. A panel of five judges selected the winners during a blind taste test using the criteria of appearance, texture and taste. In the Regular Bread category, first place went to Kathi Lake, of Chillicothe, with a Cottage Dill Bread. Second place went to Pam Miller, of Chillicothe, with her White Bread. Honorable mention was awarded to Kathryn Ratliff, of Chillicothe, with her White Bread. Pam Miller's Cranberry Orange Bread took first place in the Sweet Bread category. Miller also took second place with a Caramel Apple Bread. In the Kids' Category, the first place prize was awarded to Memphis Pickering, of Braymer, Missouri, with a Banana Bread. Honorable mentions included Faith Hollon and Grace Hollon, of Cowgill, Mo., and Cutter Pickering of Braymer, Mo. Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival
Strums Good Time An energetic crowd filled the downtown Chillicothe area for the inaugural Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival on Saturday.

Five bands from three states entertained an audience of bluegrass enthusiasts. The Chambers Family, from Kansas City, kicked off the morning. They were followed by The Missouri Boatride, from Branson, Mo.; Lonesome Road, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lowell Appling and Rural Roots from mid-Missouri; and The Bankesters from Carbondale, Ill. The "Home of Sliced Bread" bread baking contest, which had been a tradition at Chautauqua for the past half-decade, found a new home at the Sliced Bread Jam. Entries were judged in the courthouse lobby. The festival was fun for the whole family, as a number of entertainers and educators served young music fans at the children's area, set up inside Silver Moon Plaza. The kids had the opportunity to create works of art, build their own musical instruments, and play alongside the children's stage musicians. Children's area entertainers included Dan Venner, Mary Lou VanDeventer, The Chambers Family and Matthew Fraser. Picking stations were a hit with some festival goers who wanted to make their own music. Groups of strangers equipped with guitars, fiddles and upright basses created music together at the jam stations erected on the northwest corner of Webster and Washington streets. The festival was cut short by a few hours due to thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon. Despite the rain, Amy Supple, director of the Greater Chillicothe Visitors Region, called the inaugural Sliced Bread Jam a success. "We had a great time while it lasted," Supple said.
